Why be a Driving Instructor I hear you say? The image that comes to most people’s
minds when asked to describe the stereotypical Driving Instructor would be that of
a middle aged man, perhaps ex-
In 2005 I completed a Upper Second Class BA(Hons) degree in Product Design, but to
be honest at the time my heart wasn’t really in it, I needed a break from design.
For a while I considered going into teaching but decided against this as I didn’t
want to go straight into more full time training, and at the end of it, did I really
want to teach people who maybe didn’t want to be taught. Then I saw the adverts,
you know the ones:-
I took out a one year franchise contract with a national driving school to begin with, the same driving school that I trained to be a Driving Instructor with. As I have already mentioned, the training was very good, the franchise however, was not. I found the first year of my new career very frustrating, the franchise provided me with the car and everything that comes with it, but they didn’t supply me with the pupils, or not enough anyway. My first year was a struggle, and something had to change. Nine months into the one year contract I decided that at the end of the year I would leave the franchise and make a go of it on my own, I soon realised that the last year would not be wasted, I had learnt from their mistakes. I had three months to set everything up, a business plan, a brand, advertising, everything that goes with forming a company.
Being an educated Product Designer, and trained Graphic Designer has given me a lot of advantages. I believe I have designed a very recognisable brand, using my experience and contacts to help me, and save a lot of money in the process, all that is left to do is build a strong reputation and keep it, and then in the coming years expand the business.
Every Driving Standards Agency (DSA) Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) must teach at a very high level, and prove to the DSA on a regular basis that they can maintain this standard, to do this we must complete a “Test of continued ability and fitness to give instruction”, known in the business as the Check Test. The driving instructor is graded depending on their abilities on a scale of Grade 1 to Grade 6, Grade 6 being the highest grade obtainable. In June 2010 I sat my most recent Check Test and received an overall Grade 5 having only just missed out on a Grade 6 on a few of the modules that we are marked on. This result continues to help me strive to be the best driving instructor I can be and aim for that elusive and rare Grade 6 on my next Check Test.
Outside of The Driving School I lead a busy life, the most important thing to me is my family, my fiancee Amy, and myself have two children, girls named Lily Rose and Poppy Love, and they take up most of our time, and rightly so. We all love going to the park to feed the ducks and have a play. Amy and myself still manage to find time to socialise, going out with friends for a drink, or just getting to the cinema to watch a movie. Have a look at a Family Photo Album on the GALLERY page.
Anyway, you now know a little bit about The Driving School and myself. I find it helps if you have something in common with your Driving Instructor, it helps to make the tuition more comfortable and relaxed, which it turn will help you learn at a quicker rate. Hopefully you have found some information on this page that also applies to you, but above all I hope that you have enjoyed reliving with me the journey that I have taken to create The Driving School.
