The theory test is made up of a multiple choice part and a hazard perception part. You need to pass both parts to pass it. Once you have passed the theory test you can then apply to take your practical driving test. At The Driving School I will discuss with you when to take your Theory Test, as well as recommend resources to use to help you prepare for it. As you progress with your driving lessons you will be learning the information required to pass the Theory Test, but if you are struggling with this test in particular then extra lessons can be arranged to concentrate on the theory side of driving.
You may have heard that from the beginning of October 2010 the Practical Driving
Test had changed, there are two main differences between the new test and the old
which are outlined below,Your driving test will start with an eyesight check and
some vehicle safety questions, these are basic safety checks that a driver should
carry out to ensure the vehicle is safe for use, at The Driving School I will ensure
that you have the knowledge required to answer these questions successfully. You
will then be examined on your general driving and on one reversing exercise, previously
two reversing exercises on the old test. The reversing exercise will be chosen from:-
During the driving test the examiner will give you directions which you should follow. Test routes are designed to be as uniform as possible and will include a range of typical road and traffic conditions. If you make a mistake, don't worry about it as it might be a less serious driving fault and may not affect your result. The examiner will be looking for an overall safe standard of driving. You can make up to 15 driving faults and still pass the test. 16 or more faults results in failure. If you commit one serious or dangerous fault you will fail the test. If at any time your examiner considers you to be a danger to other road users your test will be stopped.
All examiners are trained to carry out the test to the same standard, they do not have pass or fail quotas. So as long as you demonstrate the standard required you will pass your driving test.
